DUNYHA is an international music project based in Budapest, led by vocalist Ilka Kisgyörgy, reimagining traditional Transylvanian folk songs through an experimental lens. The ensemble’s distinctive sound blends collective free improvisation with elements of punk and doom metal, creating a sonic world that honors folk roots while placing them in a bold, contemporary context. Central to the project is the idea of the “untouched ear”—musicians who approach folk material from outside the tradition. Free from stylistic expectations, they offer raw, intuitive interpretations that reconnect with these songs in unexpected and emotionally powerful ways.
DUNYHA doesn’t seek to rewrite or modernize tradition. Instead, it reveals the psychological intensity embedded in folk music: themes of obedience, forbidden love, loss, fear or even longing for death, oppression, and the unspoken traumas of war. These songs are not treated as nostalgic artifacts, but as living emotional documents that continue to resonate today.
The project takes its name from “dunyha“, the Hungarian word for a traditional thick quilt filled with feathers. A dunyha brings warmth and protection, but through its weight, it can also feel smothering. This duality—comforting yet oppressive—mirrors the folk songs themselves: beautiful and familiar, yet heavy with sorrow, resilience, and buried pain. By embracing these tensions, DUNYHA invites listeners into a space where ancient melodies meet deep emotion and daring experimentation. The result is music that feels both timeless and startlingly present.
