Mélanie Pain (Nouvelle Vague, FR)

  • Pop

Mélanie Pain has been the iconic voice of Nouvelle Vague for the past 20 years, all the while building a unique solo career that blends pop, folk, and intimate poetry. After three critically acclaimed albums renowned for their delicacy, she is back with How and Why, a luminous and stripped-back fourth album.

Rooted in raw folk, the album brings acoustic guitar and voice to the forefront - stripped of frills, intimate and direct. That unmistakable voice: soft, deep, and effortlessly elegant. Recorded live with her longtime bandmates, it draws inspiration from Kings of Convenience, Iron & Wine and Emilíana Torrini.

Nine tracks in English, weaving between emotion, melancholy, and rebirth - including an hypnotic duet with Brian Lopez (Calexico) and a sensual cover of Turkish rock band Duman.

A soothing, sunlit album - the perfect setting for Mélanie’s voice and words.
On tour starting September 2025.

The event is part of the MOL-New Europe Stage - Emerging Voices of Europe program series, supported by the MOL-New Europe Foundation.

Melanie Pain (FR)

Delivering confessional folk-pop chansons in English and French with the coy, breathy vocals of an ingénue, Mélanie Pain has the sort of oeuvre and style that inspire descriptions like “sugar and spice”, “naughty but nice”. As one of the main voices of Nouvelle Vague since their debut album in 2004, she seduced audiences with sassy sweetness on originals and covers like This is Not a Love Song, Teenage Kicks, Killing Moon, Ever Fallen in Love and Dance with Me.

Now Mélanie has come up with My Name, her own debut solo album which incorporates personal reflections and influences such as Françoise Hardy, Nick Cave , Claudine Longet, Nancy Sinatra and Leonard Cohen in an intimate, charming mix of French pop with a dash of folk and Americana . If the music doesn’t take you into the faintly smoky echoes of an imagined, vintage Parisian coffeeshop, it will surely ease you, semi-intoxicated, into the night.
