Barabás Lőrinc Quartet f. Erik Truffaz: Miles 100

  • Jazz

Miles Davis would have turned 100 this year.

This evening is not just a commemoration, but a living tribute to a creator who forever rewrote the boundaries of musical thinking. The concert will feature Miles Davis' iconic pieces, as well as his own compositions that are linked to him in their spirit, sound or experimental attitude. The careers of Lőrinc Barabás and Erik Truffaz intersect at many points with Miles' legacy: the trumpeter's orchestral thinking that started with jazz but constantly expanded it with pop, groove and experimental elements.

Although Miles Davis became a legend as a trumpeter, he actually wrote himself into music history not with his instrument, but with his way of thinking, because he was a grand master of renewal, search and experimentation. A restless creator who was able to turn the music world upside down again and again, and became an inspiration for generations. The Barabás Lőrinc Quartet's latest album, Open, evokes the jazz-rock universe of the 70s - the era that was fulfilled in Miles Davis's albums such as Bitches Brew, Live-Evil or In A Silent Way. This evening is a groovy, experimental, world-expanding musical journey, where past and present, respect and personal voice are present at the same time - in the spirit of Miles Davis.

Erik Truffaz (CH)

Erik Truffaz is one of the most distinctive trumpeters of contemporary European jazz, who has been thinking without genre boundaries since the beginning of his career. Naturally, jazz, electronica, rock, drum'n'bass or even world music influences can coexist in his music. His albums released on the Blue Note label (The Dawn, Bending New Corners) are of epochal significance, and his quartet is one of the most exciting, constantly renewing formations of the past three decades. Truffaz's music is both experimental and emotional – always in the present, open-minded.

Barabás Lőrinc Quartet

The quartet was formed in 2015 by Lőrinc Barabás because he missed the team spirit he was used to in his early Eklektric formation, as the line-up at his Random Szerda’s jazz jams was constantly changing.

On their rst two albums (Beardance, 2016; Other Than Unusual, 2018), groovy rhythms, upbeat bass runs, keyboards, and trumpet evoke the improvisational fusion jazz world of the 1970s. The compositions are also inuenced by world music and classical music.

In 2021, the Barabás Lőrinc Quartet has been completely revamped with a new line-up and sound. The latest album, "Open" is more experimental than the previous ones, with style and sound reminiscent of Miles Davis' and Erik Truaz's jazz fusion albums. New members have joined the quartet, and although the familiarity of trumpeter-composer Lőrinc Barabás, keyboardist Mátyás Premecz, bassist Péter Ajtai and drummer Ádám Klausz dates back to earlier times, the freshness of their reunion shines through on the record. The new band has also reinterpreted previous songs and made them part of their musical journey, as they have proven in numerous local and international performances.
