Arab Strap: Danube Music Day

  • Indie

Arab Strap are a cult Scottish indie band who are celebrating their 30th anniversary this year with a new album and a series of concerts.

The band's characteristic, thundering, melancholic sound, over which the singer's voice alternates from declamation to whisper to increasing intensity, is expanded even further on the new album Half-Told Tales compared to their previous works.

It is noteworthy that the album, which will be released on 4 September 2026 - almost exactly thirty years after their first single - ranges from disco to metal to post-rock and spoken word, while also incorporating folk and electronic elements, while still preserving the band's unique identity.

The strength of Arab Strap lies in staying true to themselves while constantly trying new musical directions. “The best way to celebrate our anniversary was to create something new, exciting and inspiring,” says Aidan Moffat. “The last thing we wanted to be was a nostalgic band that just keeps playing their old records.”

Malcolm Middleton adds: “We’re always experimenting with different styles, but it always sounds like us. Whether it’s samba rhythms, dance beats or live drumming, our identity comes naturally in the studio.”

The album’s main theme is time – its relentless passage, which becomes especially pronounced at a certain stage in life. For the duo, Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton, this is the period after their fifties, when their environment is defined by such difficult topics as inflation, the deterioration of the quality of life, wars, conflicts, the increasing extremism, populism and the distortion of reality.

Despite this, the band also maintains its optimism: “I think there is hope in it. There is also real joy on the album. I consciously paid attention to this because the previous one was very dark,” concludes Aidan Moffat.

Arab Strap is a cult Scottish indie band that celebrates its thirtieth anniversary this year with a new album and a series of concerts. In the fall, they will embark on an exclusive and limited European tour, during which they will play only eight concerts – including on 23.11.2026 at the A38 Ship in Budapest.
