The Original Forbidden Fruit

Laszlo Najmanyi (a.k.a. Pére Lachaise; A.L. Newman; Boris Popoff; David Dog;  Sir David O’Clock; DJ NoMore; Wordcitizen) is one of the pioneers of punk and electronic music in Hungary. With Gergely Molnar (a.k.a. Anton Ello; Sergei  Pravda; Gregor Davidow; DJ Helmut Spiel!) he was one of the co-founders of the Eastern Block’s first punk band, the Spions. In 1978 the band was expelled from Hungary by the Communist authorities. They moved to Paris, France. With the collaboration of Malcolm McLaren (ex-manager of Sex Pistols) and Robin Scott (of M: ’Pop Music’ -fame) they’ve released two records in France. Due to a series of interventions by the Hungarian secret services the band fell apart. After moving to Canada in 1980 Mr. Najmanyi first formed Omega Moon, an electronic band, then, with musicians from the Caribbean The Change, which played reggae-metal fusion. After moving to New York in the mid 80s Mr. Najmanyi teamed up with British musician and producer Brian Briggs and recorded a series of guitar-based songs, which were released on CD in 1998, under the title ’Dance The NewYork’. In the 1990s Mr. Najmanyi spent several years collecting music and producing local artists on the Caribbean islands and in Indonesia. Since 2000 he is working with the theremin, the world’s first space controlled electronic music instrument. ’Downtown Blues’, a collection of his theremin recordings was released on CD in 2006. In the past decade – apart from his theatrical adventures - he’s been working mostly as a solo artist, backed by video projections and electronics.
