The Durgas (USA/H)
The Durgas’ music reflects their intercontinental approach by layering authentic reggae, African and eastern European folk elements on an unapologetic Americana foundation with a potency that cuts through preconceptions of what rock is all about.
The brothers Benjii (voice, guitar) and Christopher Simmersbach (lead guitar) draw much of their musical influence from their childhood; born in Bavaria, Germany, but raised in Thailand, Tanzania, Mali, Senegal, Italy and The States, as seen in the award-winning German documentary The Big Pink (ZDF/ARTE). In 2007 the brothers were joined by East Berliner Alex Czerny on piano, hammond organ and keyboards. Singer/songwriter Katy J often joins the band on tour, playing bass. When not touring together, the band members live in Los Angeles, Budapest, Berlin, and Hawai'i respectively.
Known for their eclectic style, The Durgas' global rock sound has evolved by absorbing the musical traditions of the cultures they were surrounded by in the early years. "Delivering high-energy roots rock/blues/ pop,... The Durgas are a dynamic and passionate force bound to bring the best out of any audience" (Big Island Weekly, Hawai'i. February 2008).
