Luke Slater (UK)
Luke Slater is a London dj who became a celebrity in the techno underground.
His early recordings were collected on X-Tront (Peacefrog, 1993) and 92-94 (Peacefrog, 1997). During the heydays of techno, Slater was mainly active as Morganistic, 7th Plane, and Planetary Assault Systems. The 7th Plain released The Four Cornered Room (General Production, 1994) and My Yellow Wise Rug (General Production, 1994). Morganistic released Fluids Amniotic (Input Neuron Musique, 1995). Planetary Assault Systems had the most prolific career: Archives (Peacefrog, 1995), Electric Funk Machine (Peacefrog, 1997), The Drone Sector (Peacefrog, 1998), Atomic Funkster (Peacefrog, 2001).
Under his own name, Slater released a modest milestone of latter-day techno, Freek Funk (NovaMute, 1997), an eclectic potpourri of hip hop (Walking The Line), propulsive funk (Engine One) and ambient textures.
Compared with that feast of postmodern hybrids, Wireless (NovaMute, 1999) is disappointing, but nonetheless it contains overdoses of adrenaline.
The two volumes of All Exhale (Mute, 2000) are quintessential Slater art, especially the spectacular Futureshock.
Alright On Top (Mute, 2002) is a tired work from a tired artist who is beginning to follow the trends rather than set them. This is an album of old-fashioned techno that is rarely amusing (Nothing At All) and almost never innovative. Ricky Barrow on vocals.
