Jamie Winchester
"Hello! I am Jamie Winchester and I am an Irish musician living in Budapest. I have played and sung in loads of bands here the mostnotable of which was a collaboration with a guitarist/composer called Róbert Hrutka. We have loads of stuff on YouTube. In 2009 I have launched my solo project and released my first solo album, but let’s start from the beginning:
I was born in 1970 in Bangor (a small town near Belfast, on the Irish coast). In 1977 we moved to Vienna and I attended public schools in Dublin and Cambridge (first school band, bad hair, worse guitar playing). My family moved to Budapest in 1986. After leaving secondary school, and a fuzzy half a year my family decided that I should leave for Budapest, too. I worked as a banker for five months in 1988. In 1989 I begin to work for a concert promoter in Budapest. Best moments: Pink Floyd - Athens, Rolling Stones - Prague, U2 –Budapest, Stevie Wonder - Athens, AC/DC - Katowice, Joe Cocker – Salzburg. Worst moments: Alice Cooper - Belgrade, Deep Purple - Poznan, Sandra - Sofia, any Harlem Globetrotters gig in the former Jugoslavia.
I travelled to Agrigento (Sicily) with the band KFT in 1990. That is where I met a Russian folk choir; so my first band, Baba Yaga was born. Since then I had worked with the most prominent artists of the Hungarian music scene.
The real breakthrough came in 2001, when Robert Hrutka’s music (It’s Your Life, as a commercial for a major mobile company) and my voice and lyrics enchanted each and every television viewer. Everyone was humming and looking for the awardwinning song. Thanks to such interest, we decided to publish our first single. The song was a great success, it topped on the radio hitlists and it was requested every day.
Although that was quite some time ago, we released thrilling songs ever since, and the quality of our work is constantly very high. „The moment they started playing we wondered whether it was really live performance. Both the lead singer's voice and the alignment of the whole band was fantastic. I thought their albums undergo serious studio editing, but their live performance was just as perfect.” But all good things come to an end: we split up with Robert in 2008 and now I’m trying to show my talent with my own band and own songs…
The title track of the new album is "The Cracks are Showing". A bit like shooting flares off the Titanic, it won't help much, but it makes me feel better to get it off my chest. It's about a feeling, a frustration, and a fear that this whole wonderful, overcomplicated and greedymonolithic systemthat we have built up isstarting to fall apart. Nothing too serious ;)
My band have been playing concerts since february 2009., with very great success over whole 2009, playing the new songs, some covers and some old Jamie-Robi tunes."
