Dr. Beat

Dr. Beat

The band was formed in 1985-86 by three highschool classmates Péter Garam - keyboards, Kristof Selmeci - sampler and Gábor SZIKO Szilágyi - vocals, drum machine. The name, Dr. Beat was finalized in 1987. They approached János Kóbor (the lead singer of the legendary hungarian band Omega) to ask for an opinion. His reaction was above all expectations: he made it possible for the band to record two tracks in the Omega studio which was the most modern studio in Hungary at the time. Here the tracks "Some bizarre thing" and "Dr Beat" were recorded. In the spring of 1987 the song "Some bizarre thing" was entered for the "Children of Rock" radio talent-show competition. The success was frantic, the song lead the programme's hit list for months and it appeared on the "Children of Rock" compilation album. In the summer of 1987 there were some member changes: for a while the model Andrea Rábaközi became a member of the band, but as fast as she came she left and Charlotte Clavier the emblematic fawn of R-Go took her place. Her arrival made conflicts and Kristóf Selmeci was quitted the band for said conceptional reasons and formed the band The Bahnhof that gained major success (won) in the second round of the "Children of Rock" talent-show. In the autumn of 1987 the audience saw Dr Beat as a trio. In the first months of 1988 a firm fan base emerged countrywide - thanks to the numerous gigs all over the country and many sold out concerts in Petöfi-arena. The first album, titled "Dr Beat" came out in 1990 under Hungaroton label. In 1991 - due to outside reasons - the band suspended activities. Garam and Clavier left for the US. Garam took part in a number of international productions in Los Angeles as a sound engineer and producer and Clavier finally left the band. SZIKO put emphasis on his hobby - photography over music and became a famous photographer of Pop-Rock and fashion scene in Hungary. He didn't part company with music though... quite the opposite! In the autumn of 1992 him and Kristóf Selmeci made a maxi-single in London with the full respect of the local music critics. At the end of 1994 Garam returned from the USA and started working on the popularisation of Drum'n'Bass in Hungary and became the producer of several hungarian and english underground publications. Him and SZIKO re-started Dr Beat but this time in Drum'n'Bass style as a duo. Two of their tracks appeared on the "Future Sound of Budapest" compilation album. This formation was active strictly in underground line until 1997. Around the end of 2005 the original line up got back together again (Garam, Selmeci, SZIKO) and started working on the new material for the band.
